What to Check Before Buying a Used Toyota Hilux

Jul 10

The Toyota Hilux is a series of pickup trucks produced by Toyota. It debuted in 1968 as a new bonnet-type truck. Today, the Hilux is still one of the preferred pickup trucks in Thailand, and you can see many of them on the streets. It is great not just for carrying people but also for hauling heavy loads from farm, construction materials, garden supplies and more.

If you are buying a used Toyota Hilux, there are important factors that you need to check before buying.

Service History

Ideally, only buy a used Toyota Hilux when it has a fully documented service history so you'll know whether or not it has already undergone major repairs as a result of an accident, or if it was well-maintained by the original owner.

The service history tells you much about the truck you are buying. A well-maintained car that did not undergo major accidents could possibly last for many more years. If you are buying a Hilux that is just a few years old, if it was properly handled and looked after by the original owner, it could take many years before it will need a major overhaul or repairs.

Moreover, the service history will also give you an idea if the car has a previous or known issue. Stay away from a Hilux with no clear service history as this could be an indication that the owner is not willing to provide you with all the information needed for decision-making.

Engine

The Toyota Hilux is available in both diesel and gasoline variants, and depending on which type of engine you choose, there are different issues that could potentially arise as a result of wear and tear.

Check the engine thoroughly for any signs of damage. Moreover, an engine that is not cleaned regularly can accumulate dust and debris that can affect the engine's performance over time. There are many other aspects of the engine that need checking to ensure that the vehicle has no leaks or fuel pump issues. If you aren't sure what to look for, bring your trusted mechanic on the day of viewing to do the checking for you.

Signs of Rust

Rust is a common issue among Toyota Hilux pickup trucks as they are commonly used as workhorses. Because of the pickup’s high-loading capacity, many owners use this vehicle for hauling seafood and other products that expose it to saltwater which is a leading cause for rust. Moreover, exposure to the elements also has the same effect.

Signs of Underbody Damage

The Hilux is also a popular choice for off-roading. Either basic or professional off-roading especially if done more frequently and if the vehicle has no underbody protection can put the vehicle at risk of permanent damage.

Check underneath the vehicle and look for signs of leaks, misalignment, cracking and significant scratching. All these can possibly compromise the integrity of the vehicle.

Modifications

There is generally nothing wrong with modifications unless they were done by a backyard or less experienced mechanic. If the truck has been modified, check for bad alignment that could collapse without warning, putting you at risk of a road accident.

Overall Feel

Even if the car looks spotless, you can't have 100% guarantee of its performance unless you drive it. That's why it is important to ask for a test drive before buying any type of vehicle.

During the test drive, don't just limit to stop-and-go traffic, and try different speeds and see how the vehicle reacts. Notice the gauges if they work as they should. And be on the lookout for unnecessary noise. Additionally, take note of how the brake works.
