After over a month with no local infections, Vietnam has registered 176 confirmed coronavirus cases from multiple outbreaks that have spread to 19 provinces in the past 10 days, the Ministry of Health said.

Hanoi National Tropical Disease Hospital, which serves on the front lines for COVID-19 patients, was cordoned off after a doctor, two nurses and more than 20 patients tested positive earlier this week.

Meanwhile, the city’s K Hospital, designed to treat cancer patients, closed on Friday after 11 cases of COVID-19 were found.

“The situation is alarming as there are multiple outbreaks across the country with unclear sources of transmission and different variants of the virus,” Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long said during a government meeting that was broadcast on national television VTV Friday evening.

Schools have closed and classes have been postponed online in the 19 provinces and cities with COVID-19 cases.

In Hanoi, authorities urged people not to congregate while city parks and food stalls were closed. In the south of Ho Chi Minh City, gatherings of more than 30 people were banned from this weekend. The city has also closed bars, clubs, gyms, and buffet restaurants.

Meanwhile, a 35-year-old nurse died of a severe allergic reaction after receiving a shot of AstraZeneca on Friday night, the Ministry of Health said.

According to the ministry, over 700,000 people, including health workers, contact tracing officers, police officers and army officers, have been vaccinated with the AstraZeneca shots, the only vaccine used in Vietnam.

Since the pandemic started, Vietnam has recorded 3,137 confirmed cases with 35 deaths.
