Drought-hit Taiwan rations water to protect tech

Instead, solutions are being sought in Taiwan’s surrounding waters to build more seawater desalination plants. Most are on remote islands, with only three on Taiwan’s main island. A new facility has been built in Hsinchu to cope with the current drought. However, it can only treat 13,000 tons of water per day. This is a drop in the bucket compared to the 170,000 tons consumed daily by just the Hsinchu Science Park, where many semiconductor manufacturers are based.
