The YouTuber-turned boxer Jake Paul wiped out Ben Askren in the first round of the ex-MMA fighter’s first boxing match, offering a suitably absurd end to a night that showed “how deep boxing really went”.
Tubby veteran Askren lasted slightly longer than the five seconds he fought for in a loss to Jorge Masvidal at UFC 239 in 2019.
The 36-year-old swayed for a few seconds before the referee dodged the fight, which was even less challenging than when he won his professional boxing career second last year when he poleaxed former NBA star Nate Robinson in a brutal two-round demolition that many had suggested was dangerous, given Robinson’s clear lack of preparation.
“I think today proves the fact that if you have enough followers, you can really do what you want,” scoffed comedian Pete Davidson, part of building a showdown that cost $ 50 to watch .
“Tonight we have an argument between Ben Askren – I don’t know who he is and I’ve been reading about him all week – and Jake Paul.
“You can tell how professional this event is when you have me here. Today is a wild day for boxing because it shows how deep it really has gone. They both suck, but at least someone gets hurt. “
Pop superstar Justin Bieber and legendary rappers Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube were among those on the celebrity bill, and there was another comedy moment where Bieber seemed to forget he had another song to play.

Bieber’s gig didn’t end quite as early as Askren’s, and many suggested the boxing rookie went out with such a whimper that his defeat could even have been arranged in advance.
“Wait a minute, did Askren get us all?” Former UFC two-weight champion Daniel Cormier asked how seriously Askren had taken his job while highlighting footage of him laughing backstage after his loss. “This is magical stuff. Come on, Ben.”
Masvidal retweeted a post saying, “Ben Askren is the miserable example of what an elite MMA athlete doesn’t stand for.
“Since [losing to Masvidal] He cut the connection and only felt sorry for playing the clown. The Jake Paul thing should stop and hopefully some serious boxer will beat him up. “
Askren downplayed the importance of the embarrassing spectacle. “I wasn’t nervous at all because my life isn’t changing one way or another,” he explained.
“In MMA I always defended or pursued a world title and today I had a fun boxing match.

“If it turns out great, then great. If it turns out damn, my life is the same. I won’t be back. I won’t be in any kind of cage. It’s unhappy. I really did it . ” I think I could do better. That wasn’t fun. “
Paul dedicated his victory to his bodyguard ‘Shadow’, who died in the days before the fight.
“I feel like I’m living in a dream. I had a lot on my mind … I had to go through a lot of hard s ***, allegations, deaths – the list goes on.” said the 24-year-old. “I’ve talked a lot. I’ll just enjoy my life for a second.”
