The new Apple TV + series, The Mosquito Coast, follows insane political inventor Allie Fox and his family in the events leading up to the famous 1981 Paul Theroux novel, which was adapted in a 1986 Golden Globe-nominated film starring Harrison Ford.
Playing Fox is the author’s nephew, Justin Theroux. Fox is still a quirky guy who draws his family into his breakaway belief system and a life where they’re constantly on the run from the authorities. In the film, Fox (played by Ford in the film) came up with a great invention that turns fire into ice. He brings it to Central America where he turns a local community into a utopian society. The Apple TV + series describes the incidents that lead Fox, his wife Margot (Melissa George) and daughter Dina (Logan Polish) as well as his son Charlie (Gabriel Bateman) south.

“The guy in the book and the guy in the movie belong to a specific set of political, economic, and historical circumstances,” said Mosquito Coast EP / showrunner and creator Neil Cross during the series’ panel at the . Contenders Television Awards season, where he was accompanied by Theroux, George and director / EP Rupert Wyatt. “Step one we took was who would this guy be now?”
Justin Theroux says Uncle Paul is “extremely pleased” with the prequel version of the series.
While Ford plays a guy who goes crazy in the report, it is not part of Justin Theroux’s Mo to push the boundaries of Fox’s state of mind.
“He’s obviously a forward-leaning and very complicated man. He’s kind of a zealot for himself, ”said the actor. “He definitely has flaws. He definitely has opinions. He’s definitely convinced of certain things, especially his family. The fun playing him, and hopefully the fun watching him, is – and when we’ve done our job – you will find him charismatic and angry. It’s really kind of like playing with the volume control for the properties it has. “
“The book has its own finite ending,” he added, “but it’s still kind of TBD to Neil, which areas we want to start playing in when we’re lucky, a second season, and a third and fourth to get.”
