Matthew McConaughey

A report from Yahoo this week revealed that Matthew McConaughey actually wanted to try his hand at a superhero movie. After Edward Norton decided to retire from his role as the Hulk, Matthew expressed an interest in taking Norton’s place.

During an episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast starring Josh Horowitz, Matthew said he wanted to play the Incredible Hulk, but Marvel Studios wondered if this was a good idea. As previously reported, Norton left the MCU after his appearance in the 2008 film.

At the time, Norton’s portrayal of the Hulk was only the MCU’s second film, and it didn’t do as well at the box office or with critics as the studios had hoped. When asked if he wanted to portray the Hulk, Matthew said he wanted to.

Marvel Studios reportedly replied, “No thanks” to his request. Instead, Marvel went with Mark Ruffalo, who has portrayed the character in The Avengers since 2012. As most know, Mark’s portrayal of the Hulk has been lauded.

Matthew never went into detail as to why the studios wouldn’t cast him, but it’s worth noting that this was right before Matthew’s rebirth in the film industry with productions like True Detective, Dallas Buyer’s Club, Mud, and more.

Even with a number of incredibly successful films, McConaughey hasn’t had a chance to work in a superhero movie. No question about it, Matthew’s career has been the subject of many ups and downs.

For example, the actor has claimed that in the past he fought with all his might to get out of romantic comedies. For years it seemed like he was destined to always act in movies as a love interest, but he eventually broke into movies like Mud, where Matthew showed he was capable of much more.

The actor secured a Best Actor win for his portrayal of an AIDS-infected cowboy at the Dallas Buyer’s Club, in which he co-starred with Jared Leto and Jennifer Garner.
