MJ, the new musical inspired by the life of Michael Jackson, will begin on Broadway on December 6th with a premiere on Tuesday, February 1, 2022 at the Neil Simon Theater, producers announced today.
As previously announced, MJ, which will star Tony Award nominee Ephraim Sykes, includes a book by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage and a score from Jackson’s hits. Christopher Wheeldon will direct and choreograph.
Producers Lia Vollack Productions and The Michael Jackson Estate announced this this morning.
The creative team consists of Scenic Design by Tony and two-time Emmy Award winner Derek McLane, Lighting Design by six-time Tony Award winner Natasha Katz, Costume design by Tony and Emmy Award winner Paul Tazewell, Sound Design by two-time Tony Award nominee Gareth Owen, projection design by two-time Tony Award nominees Peter Nigrini and Hair & Wig Design by two-time Emmy Award nominees Charles LaPointe.
The creative team will also include Musical Supervision by David Holcenberg, Orchestrations and Arrangements by David Holcenberg and Tony Award-winning Jason Michael Webb, and Music Direction by Jason Michael Webb.
Anyone who has previously purchased tickets for MJ at Ticketmaster.com will be informed by email of priority access prior to the sale to purchase tickets for the new dates. Tickets will be available to the general public starting Tuesday, May 18, at 10 a.m. CET.
MJ was originally scheduled to start the Broadway preview on July 6, 2020, with an opening night on August 13, which was then initially postponed to March 2021 due to the shutdown of the pandemic.
Not expected to focus on Jackson’s personal life or controversy, the musical features the thriller star and his staff as they rehearse for the 1992 Dangerous Tour.
