Georgian flyweight Liana Jojua’s hopes of her second UFC win on “Fight Island” at UFC 254 remained in blood and tears after being stopped at the end of the first round because of a nasty cut on the nose.
Jojua started well against UFC newcomer Miranda Maverick, but soon battled her hind foot as the American began to weigh on her strikes.
In return, Jojua continued to play hard, but was constantly pushed back by Maverick’s heavier blows. It led commentator Daniel Cormier to point out that the Georgian, known for her armbar filings, may be better off getting the action on the mat.
However, Jojua continued to trade with Maverick and was punished when the American tied a giant elbow to the bridge of “She-Wolf” ‘s nose, which left a huge cut that immediately bled heavily over her face.
Jojua made it to the end of the round without bothering about her cut, but the cutman – and the umpire – were much more concerned when the cutman got to work trying to curb the flow of blood.
Then, when a cage doctor asked about Jojua’s nose, he and the referee both agreed that the fight should be stopped when Jojua asked the official not to end the fight and yelled, “NO, NO, NO!”
The decision to end the fight seemed to divide fans on social media. However, some fans suggested that the fight would not have stopped if it had been a fight between two male fighters.
“I don’t want to pull the gender card, but I’ve literally never seen a fight between male fighters that was stopped because of that particular cut. If I have it, it must have included the fact that the nose was broken.”

How bad was the cut on Jojua? I mean we saw the worst. What happens if Gaethje is cut open in round one and bleeds? Will the doctor stop it too? # UFC254

Others said they were okay with the interruption and praised Maverick’s technology.
“Jojua would have flooded that cage with blood if the fight had continued. Let’s get that,” tweeted one fan while another offered, “That cut on Jojua was way too aggressive for the fight to go on. Good Interruption by the referee, congratulations to the newcomer Maverick and pity for Jojua. “

This cut against Jojua was far too aggressive for the fight to continue. Good break from the referee, congratulations to newcomer Maverick and thanks to Jojua. # UFC254
