Tennessee Titans fined $350,000 by NFL for coronavirus protocol violations

A review by the league and the NFL Players Association found the team violated mask wearing protocols and did not communicate adequately with players through training sessions and off-site meetings. The NFL previously ruled out any fines for individuals and more severe penalties for the team. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell had warned the teams that protocol violations leading to schedule changes could result in game losses or the loss of draft picks.

The NFL and NFLPA are currently investigating possible violations by the Las Vegas Raiders. According to a person familiar with the review, it is believed that Raider’s offensive device Trent Brown did not wear his tracking device as required and there is a video showing improper gatherings of the team’s offensive linemen without masks inside the team facility.

Brown was put on the Raiders’ Covid-19 reserve list last week after allegedly testing positive for the coronavirus. Four more launch offensive linemen for the team and security Johnathan Abram have been put on the Covid-19 reserve list after being identified as high-risk close contacts that required five days of isolation. As a precaution, the NFL has removed the Raiders-Buccaneers game from the time slot on Sunday evening.

The game is to be played on Sunday afternoon and the four linemen who had close contacts are eligible to play. Abram is said to be missing the game because his isolation lasts until Sunday. The Raiders had no additional positive test results during the week.

Any fine by the Raiders could be more severe if the team is considered repeat offenders. Coach Jon Gruden, the team and a number of Raiders players have already been fined for protocol violations related to wearing masks and unauthorized access to the locker room.

The NFL was in contact with the New York Giants, according to a person familiar with the situation, when the team was investigating a video showing quarterback Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley walking back in a bar in Manhattan on Friday night without a mask.

Players would be fined if it was found there were violations of the sport’s coronavirus protocols, according to the person who said the Giants could discipline if warranted or the league could intervene.

According to reports, Jones and Barkley went to dinner with teammates and friends in a private room of a Manhattan restaurant and were then invited to a bar closed to the public. The video was reportedly recorded there and posted on social media. Barkley is out at the end of the season with a knee injury.

The Giants played Thursday night and lost in Philadelphia. They won’t play again until November 2nd in a Monday night game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Meadowlands.

The NFL previously fined Darren Waller and other Las Vegas Raiders players for being maskless at a charity event hosted by Waller in violation of state health guidelines.
