With the go-ahead from federal health officials, many states resumed use of the one-off Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine on Saturday. Among the venues where it has been used: the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Other states besides Indiana ordering or recommending readmission included Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New York, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.

Those steps came quickly after U.S. health officials said Friday night they would lift an eleven-day vaccination break with the J&J vaccine. During the hiatus, scientific advisors decided that the vaccine’s benefits outweigh an uncommon risk of blood clots.

“New York State will resume administration of this vaccine in all state locations with immediate effect,” Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a statement on Saturday morning.

“The vaccine is the weapon that will win the war on COVID and allow everyone to return to normal. We have three proven vaccines,” Cuomo said, urging New Yorkers to take whichever one is available.

“The sooner we are all vaccinated, the sooner we can leave the long COVID nightmare behind us once and for all,” he said.

The Indiana Department of Health announced the resumption of a free COVID-19 mass vaccination clinic on Saturday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, offering the J&J vaccine to anyone aged 18 and over. The clinic will be operational until at least April 30th, when there is a family vaccination day, on which 16- and 17-year-olds can also be vaccinated.

“I can’t think of a better way to see the month of May in Indiana than getting your vaccine at the Yard of Bricks this week,” said Dr. Chris Weaver, clinical director of Indiana University Health who worked with the state in directing the Speedway Clinic.

1,415 doses had been administered on the speedway by early afternoon, the Indiana Health Department said.

The Virginia health authorities also urged vendors to resume use of the J&J vaccine immediately.

“This additional review should instill confidence in the existing system that ensures the safety of COVID-19 vaccines,” said Dr. Danny Avula, the state vaccination coordinator. “As with any vaccine, we encourage individuals to educate themselves about possible side effects and weigh them against the possibility of hospitalization or death from COVID-19.”

Missouri officials made a similar announcement, saying that vendors with J&J vaccines in stock can start managing immediately and that federal government shipments will resume next week.

Before the break, just over 105,000 doses of J&J were administered in Missouri.

In Michigan, where local health officials play a key role in vaccination decisions, the state’s chief medical officer, Dr. Joneigh Khaldun to resume the J&J vaccine resumption.

In Los Angeles County, the most populous county in the country, public health officials told vaccine providers they could resume administration of J&J doses on Saturday, provided they provided an updated information sheet to recipients.

Dr. Paul Simon, science director for the county’s health department, said the county had been working on developing additional materials to help explain the clotting problem that triggered the break.

These will “contain what we think is really important information about what to look for – the signs and symptoms if you have this again, very rare reaction,” he said. “And we will underline that this is a very rare reaction.”

The federal government uncovered 15 vaccine recipients who developed a highly unusual type of blood clot in nearly 8 million people after the J&J shot. All were women, most of them under 50 years of age. Three died and seven remain in the hospital.

Ultimately, however, federal health officials decided that J & J’s one-of-a-kind vaccine was vital to fighting the pandemic – and that the risk of small clots could be treated with warnings to help younger women decide whether to take them Should use shot or an alternative.
